In animation and comics, there are Rules.
Rules tell you what your characters can and cannot do, and indicates how they react in a given situation. Rules help set the characters' personalities and determine the action in the comic strip.
For example, if you set a story under the sea, and some characters can breathe there, but others may drown —you have to explain this.
in FurBabies, the animals can be understood by some humans but not others. The Others will be minor characters. Kate's parents will always be offscreen and will only speak with Kate.
Floof and Sirius get into Mischief by playing with Kate's shoes and socks, like real pets do. They will never play with yarn, which can kill real cats and dogs.
Cartoon animals can eat anything. I laughed out loud at Garfield's fondness for lasagna and Snoopy's chef's kitchen in a doghouse. Real cats should not eat lasagna but Garfield is not a 'real' cat. Real dogs do not have chef's kitchens in doghouses. Snoopy is not a 'real' dog.
The Furbabies are a little different. They act like actual cats and dogs, and must eat foods that are healthy and safe for actual cats and dogs.
Stella the poodle is very fond of poached eggs on toast. This will not hurt her, although it's only an occasional treat.
Kate doesn't like to eat liver and feeds it to the dogs. Liver is very good for the dogs and will not hurt them. The cupcakes and cookies in the comic are all vanilla or gingerbread. These are safe for cats and dogs. Chocolate is fatal to them, so it will never appear in the strip.
It's a sort of balancing act and I'm still learning the ropes.
