Always interesting to discover how people started out.

I can’t honestly say that my bumpy career path in animation has been full of such coincidences-maybe a few unfortunate ones, like my grad film - an unofficial adaptation of a Ray Bradbury short story - being entered into the 1982 Zagreb International Animation festival in competition and the sharing a lift there with a design hero of mine, Saul Bass, who I later discovered was a close friend of Bradbury’s…:)

As a footnote I did take the precaution of writing to Bradbury’s agent with my intentions while making the film at St Martins in London and he kindly replied that all Bradbury’s rights at that time were with Disney.

The college for its part entered the finished film without my knowledge, possibly to justify their financial support.

Still, I got to visit Zagreb and I was already a big fan of the studio’s work - the film didn’t win anything and in fact that year no grand prize was awarded.

Which is not to say that you weren’t selected on some cosmic level to be an animator!

That make me wonder just what the cosmos is about. There is a theory that we are all 3D projections from a 2D universe. In which case, I say, who is animating us, Bugs Bunny or Elmer Fudd? My money is on Fudd.

Can't argue there. I'd like Bugs' energy and attitude, or at least Daffy's energy.

When you were talking about the support you got from your dad, it reminded me of the good fortune one has when selecting parents. My folks were the first people in their respective families who wanted to get off the farm and go to college, and that affected their attitudes toward me. Dad was going to school on the GI Bill after the war, and he apparently taught me everything you learn in primary school. That was about it, but I shudder to think what my life would have been had I been born to any of my relatives or neighbors.

I don't believe that the coincidences were coincidences. Someone wanted me to be an animator...

You had me at Don Duckworth.

I didn't get his private stationery. That had...no one but Donald Duck! on it.

I suspect he was celebrating an unfair advantage in the biz.
